The Arc de Triomphe was built between 1806 and 1836 on the Place de l’Étoile, now known as Place Charles-de-Gaulle. It is a national monument of great historical significance.
Located at the top of the Champs-Élysées, it is one of Paris’s most iconic landmarks and a must-visit destination for travellers.
A Monument Commissioned by Napoleon I
The construction of the Arc de Triomphe was ordered by Napoleon I, following his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz, to pay tribute to the victories of the French armies. This project was part of his desire to glorify the army and leave a lasting mark on the Parisian landscape.
A Long and Eventful Construction
The construction project experienced several interruptions due to the political and geopolitical context of the time. The Arc de Triomphe was finally completed under the reign of Louis-Philippe. Its impressive dimensions reflect the ambition of the project:
- 50 metres in height
- 45 metres in width
- 22 metres in depth
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Since 1920, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the First World War has been located at the foot of the monument. It pays tribute to all soldiers who died in combat. Since 1923, a Flame of Remembrance has been lit and rekindled every evening at 6:30 pm, perpetuating the memory of the fallen.
A Unique Viewpoint Over Paris
The Arc de Triomphe offers an exceptional panoramic view of Paris. From the summit, visitors can admire:

A Rare Natural Phenomenon to Observe
It is worth noting that the sun sets in line with the Champs-Élysées twice a year. On these occasions, the sun appears perfectly aligned beneath the Arc de Triomphe, creating a remarkable spectacle. From Porte Maillot, it is also possible to observe the sunrise in line with the monument, particularly in February and November.
